Eatin Good in Granada

November 7 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

Although I dont think it formally deserves this title, so far Spain feels like the meat capital of the world. However, Granada (in the south of Spain) has a booming vegan scene thats growing every year!  I didnt get to spend much time in Granada, but I did have the opportunity to work with an incredible little vegetarian restaurant that offered a heap of superb vegan dishes by the name of AlLaurel. This cozy veggie bistro is centrally located by the famous Catedral de Granada and welcomes you in with chic styling, a delicious menu del día, and local artisanal wines and cervezas. While there I got to sample a few of their famous dishes including a leek and ginger soup, seitan skewers (drooling), and traditional tomato and avocado salad. The cuisine was fantastically fresh, obviously organic, and perfectly plated by Ále (short for Alejandro), the restaurants lead chef. I left AlLaurel with a happy tummy and a newfound respect for seitan. The next day, while in search for some lunch in town, I stumbled upon a little vegan tapas bar called El Ojú. You heard me right, a vegan TAPAS bar. You know, where you buy a drink and you […] The post Eatin Good in Granada appeared first on The Veggie Blog.

Three exquisite places in the world to enjoy a vegan afternoon tea

November 6 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

Being a lover of all things vegan, travel and afternoon tea has seen me seek out the world’s absolute top experiences for spoiling oneself while partaking in this very British tradition with a vegan twist.   These are in my opinion, the three most exquisite places in the world, where you can enjoy an vegan afternoon tea in an elegant setting:   Fortnum & Mason, London   This very British institution actually offers a vegan afternoon tea menu that you do not have to pre-order in anyway. You still have to book a table, or course but Fortnum & Mason actually offers a complete vegan afternoon tea menu as a compliment to their ordinary menu. I visited just last week and enjoyed their warm service and got spoiled, pampered and stuffed to the hilt! You get five different finger sandwiches and of course, if you want more of any kind, just ask for it. My favourite was the artichoke and salsa verde. Two favourites in one.   The scones were warm and delicious, the desserts plentiful and beautifully made, if you go dont miss the calvados and apple loaf. I cant recommend this place enough.   New York Café, Budapest […] The post Three exquisite places in the world to enjoy a vegan afternoon tea appeared first on The Veggie Blog.

Veggies On Fire – The Hague

October 17 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

The Hague is one of my favorite cities in the Netherlands. The Hague is the city of peace and law, located on the coast of the North Sea with wide sandy beaches. It is a city of new styles and old masters, with shops, palaces, green parks and beautiful museums like the Mauritshuis. And above all, it is a city where you can eat great vegan food. John and Carin Galstaun run Veggies on Fire. They offer purely vegetable dishes and beverages. All ingredients they use are, whenever possible, of biological origin and locally grown. To give a dish a little kick they use some exotic products here and there. For example, their Chipotle Burger contains smoked chipotle peppers imported from Mexico. They state on their website: By eating vegetables, you contribute to the environment, your health, and enhance animal welfare. There is a better economical use of water and other natural resources, and the choice of pure plant nutrition eventually leads to a much more efficient global food distribution. We will bring you good food and harmony in the broadest sense of the word, in our restaurant on the Beeklaan 385 in The Hague. So, of course we had to check […] The post Veggies On Fire – The Hague appeared first on The Veggie Blog.

Restaurant Review: Spirit in Rotterdam, Netherlands

September 7 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

Visiting the Rotterdam Markthal was one of the hotspots on my wish list. And I loved the building, especially the very colorful ceiling. Truly beautiful. To make the experience even better, we had a great veganvegetarian option nearby; Spirit. Located in the Green Passage of Rotterdam, Spirit serves a fully vegetarian (and mostly vegan, I think about 75-80% is vegan) buffet. The concept reminded me of LEtto in Napoli — you compose your own breakfast, lunch or dinner and pay by weight. There is also the option to do take-away. Somebody called it a ‘vegetarian valhalla served in the form of a high end buffet. And I couldnt agree more. Spirit has a huge buffet with a variety of fifty different breakfast, lunch or dinner dishes, juices and patisserie to choose from. There are beautiful bowls filled with salads, hot dishes, soups, all kind of toppings and dips. And there is also a great selection of sweets, cakes and ice-cream. Every dish is accompanied by a card with all the ingredients and there a little signs that tell if a dish is vegan, gluten-free, contains nuts and so on. For me that is a very relaxing way to eat. You […] The post Restaurant Review: Spirit in Rotterdam, Netherlands appeared first on The Veggie Blog.

FOAM Catering – The Hague

August 21 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

FOAM started as a, surprise surprise...catering company (FOAM stands for “Fresh, Organic, and Meat-Free”). But in 2016, FOAM opened the doors of its brand new ‘Health Food Hotspot’ in one of the hottest neighborhoods in The Hague. The Frederikstraat is a very lively street with all kinds of restaurant and cute little shops. FOAM is a hip white vegan hotspot with a lovely garden where you can enjoy a great organic coffee, fresh juices and a delicious lunch or good breakfast. There is also a terrace in front of the restaurant, if you prefer to enjoy the hustle and bustle from the street. I really liked the way the restaurant is decorated, with crisp white walls and furniture and fresh flowers, vegetables and fruit on display. They also have a wide range of vegan cakes, pies and brownies. During our visit, my sister enjoyed a salad and I had a portobello burger with fresh mint-tea. Portions are not that big but that just left some room for dessert! I had a lovely apricot and orange cake. The whole menu is 100% plant-based and they say on their website that “all their food is prepared with a lot of love.” All […] The post FOAM Catering – The Hague appeared first on The Veggie Blog.

Blossom – New York

August 7 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

Blossom Restaurant has two locations in New York — one in Chelsea and one on the Upper West Side. We have visited the Chelsea twice! It is just around the corner from the beautiful High Line Park, which is truly a beautiful site! After a walk through the park, where I really really enjoyed all the beautiful flowers (very good job done by Piet Oudolf, the Dutch designer of the garden), we stumbled upon Blossom Restaurant by accident. We recognized the name while driving by in a yellow cab. So we asked the driver to stop and we went in for lunch. Not knowing the size of the portions, we ordered an entree. But after seeing the size of the salad we knew that we had ordered way too much! It was a very nice salad and the main course was even better. I had a wonderful portobello burger which I truly enjoyed. There is an easy going vibe at Blossom Restaurant and the menu is entirely vegan. For cautious carnivores, Blossom Restaurant offers one big surprise: all the eggless pastas and mock meats actually taste pretty good! For those who miss the taste of meat (I am not […] The post Blossom – New York appeared first on The Veggie Blog.

The Butchers Daughter – New York

August 3 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

The Butchers Daughter is a cozy, crisp concept with lots of fresh food, good music and a very friendly staff. There is an easy going vibe for people enjoying their good, fresh food. We were happy to see that a new location for The Butcher’s Daughter was added since the last time we were in NY. So there is one in Nolita and one in the West Village. On their website they say: The Butchers Daughter is a plant-based restaurant, cafe, juice bar and vegetable slaughterhouse.”  We treat fruits and vegetables as a butcher would meat: We chop, fillet and carve fresh produce into healthy vegetarian dishes and press them into pretty juices.   Our three locations serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. We take pride in our daily changing menu, which is 100% vegetarian, and mostly vegan and gluten-free. We can always prepare substitutions for most dietary restrictions. (photo via The Butcher’s Daughter Facebook) And it is true–they are more than willing to tell you about all the vegan options that are available. And what we saw around us was lots of large bowls with fresh green salads, avocado toast, and all kinds of beautiful greenery. Unfortunately we were […] The post The Butchers Daughter – New York appeared first on The Veggie Blog.

Restaurant Highlight – The Beet, Byron Bay

July 17 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

I live on the east coast of Australia in a coastal town called Byron Bay. We have juice bars and salad bars and most places will be able to veganise a dish by leaving out a few ingredients. The pub down the road from me has vegetarian nachos. When I go there for dinner, I ask them for the vegan version, which means I get the corn chips, salsa, guacamole and beans minus the cheese and sour cream - the chefs usually give me a double serving of corn chips, which I think is really lovely. I recently attended a new restaurant with friends, and before going, I checked if they had vegan options; they said they did, but I wasnt convinced. Sure enough, the vegan options were limited to two - hot chips and roast veggies. I later wrote a very friendly message to the new owners, via their Facebook page, explaining to them that I was very disappointed and that when key ingredients in a dish were omitted and not replaced, the flavour was severely lacking. They replied promptly and were very apologetic, saying that they would try much harder. That would be a win, I would say. The Best Vegan Dishes From Around The World (Plus GIVEAWAY)

July 10 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

In English-speaking countries, where a typical meal consists of a piece of meat and two vegetables, people often wrongly imagine that vegans must live on a diet of mushy peas and mashed potatoes. In other parts of the world, however, plants play a much more prominent role in the native cuisine. From Asia to the Middle East to Africa, most of the worlds traditional cuisines are largely plant based and use animal products only sparingly. For this reason, many people who adopt a vegan lifestyle find that their diet actually becomes more varied, not less so. A beauty-salon for you insides. We are a plant-based organic food & natural wine bar. – Le Botaniste The beautiful logo & website caught my attention... So this place was high on my list of places to visit in New York. And the reality was even so much better than I thought. image via Le Botaniste Le Botaniste is a botanical-based, apothecary-inspired restaurant. The seasonally changing menu features chef-designed prescriptions such as the Tibetan Mama: a savory combination of brown rice, peanut curry sauce, steamed greens and spicy kimchi, and the Dirty Noodle Soup: with velvety tofu, steamed leeks, garlic and spicy ginger. 3 Survival Tactics For Vegans In An Inter-Dietary Household

June 26 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

Whichever reason prompted you to go on the vegan path, it all started with one person making a choice. But ‘no person is an island’ says the oh-so-true edict, and many vegans have long standing relationships with others who have not (yet) made the same choice. This is the case with my love and I. When we became a couple she was already a vegan. I respect her choice, and as the home-cook I find it yet another facet of life in which I can express my love to her. Whether its a couple in a relationship, or a member of a family, being in an inter-dietary relationship poses challenges to maintaining a sustainable vegan lifestyle. Easier said than done As much as the principle issue of leading a vegan lifestyle is in itself important, it takes a back seat to the more mundane issue of the day-to-day effort of maintaining a vegan kitchen that can support the choices of one, or more, of the members in an inter-dietary household. It’s on this daily long-term effort that I would like to share with you the three most important survival tactics we came up with, which we employ and deem essential […] The post 3 Survival Tactics For Vegans In An Inter-Dietary Household appeared first on The Veggie Blog.

Terra Madre – Alberobello, Puglia, Italy

June 22 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

If you’ve ever been to Alberobello, you know that this little white town looks like a fairytale with all the trulli houses. In the heart of Alberobello there is a special trulli house where you can have great organic, mostly vegan food. At Terra Madre they had a dream. A dream where man and land rediscovered their old friendship. The concept is simple: sowing, growing and harvesting by using the compost  they produce on site and recycling the biodegradable products from the breakfasts they serve at their hotel Charming Trulli. The compost is used in the organic garden behind the Trattoria, where the first fruits grow, as well as in Terra Madre Country, about 2 hectares of land situated a few km from the city center, which are divided into 3 small plots cultivated 2 months apart one from the other to guarantee the crop rotation. At Terra Madre they want to celebrate vegetables. And they do. Instead of using the freezer, fruits remain on the tree until they reach maturity, to ensure that they are as fresh and flavorsome as nature intended. Isnt that the best? The cuisine is simple, with strong and intense flavors and they only use organic ingredients. […] The post Terra Madre – Alberobello, Puglia, Italy appeared first on The Veggie Blog.

Simply Raw Bakery is simply a delight for anyone with a healthy sweet tooth and a taste for aesthetic splendor. Located on the winding cobbled streets at the heart of Viennas historic inner center, the restaurants stylish exterior blends in with the citys effortless old-style elegant appeal. On late summer days, youre sure to see locals happily sipping coffee over a leisurely lunch while basking in the sun. Yet upon closer examination, youll see that these lunch-goers have quite a different palate than the stereotypical Viennese meat-heavy tastes (think Wienerschnitzels and sausage-filled gulasch stews). Simply Raw brings full flavor to the table with the use of only vegan, gluten-free, organic, and raw wholesome ingredients. The bakery was born from a collaboration of a mother-daughter pair whose original expertise was in textile company management and graphic design, respectively. The artistic backbone of this family affair oozes from the pores of the restaurants interior. From the vintage cozy couches to the overhanging crystal chandelier to the modern piano jazz jams to the glamorous presentation of the plant-based charming creations on dainty china plates, Simply Raw feels like youve stepped into an alternate era of sweet elegance. Most importantly, the attention to artful […] The post Simply Sweet Elegance At Simply Raw Bakery appeared first on The Veggie Blog.

Sampling The Vegan Scene In Sheffield

October 16 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

One of the greatest things about traveling full-time is meeting all kinds of amazing people from all over the world. While on a year-long backpacking trip through Latin America, I met a British guy named Julien and we hit it off, traveling with each other through Bolivia before parting ways in Peru. I later told him that Id be heading off to the U.K at some point and he invited me to come by Sheffield to check out his university town and hit the pub for a few pints. I quickly learned that a few pints never really means a few and that Rugby Socials are hands down the craziest events on this planet. I also learned that the Vegan scene in Sheffield is absolutely booming. In my 5 days in Sheffield, I was lucky enough to photograph 5 of the top vegan and veggie restaurants in the area. Here are their stories and some photos from the trip. Want to follow along? Check out my vegan-photo-filled Instagram @DropEverythingAndTravel   Humpit Located just south of The University of Sheffield, Humpit is the place in town to get your weekly required fill of hummus. Vegan In Bangladesh

October 10 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

Unfortunately, there is no magic word in Bangladesh to easily describe your dietary preferences. It is very difficult for a Bangladeshi person to understand that you do not want any meat. At least, this was my experience while trying to eat vegan food in Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, everything vegetarian will most likely be vegan too. They never use Ghee, since vegetable oil is way cheaper. This is especially true for street food–places will use mustard or corn oil. The kitchen of Bangladesh is very Indian-inspired. But where India is the master of vegetarian food, Bangladesh has a whole other (meat) culture. One important thing to keep in mind is that there will always be traces of meat in your food. Meat will typically be fried in the same oil as veggie dishes, or your vegan food will be served with the same spoon used for meat dishes. Because of this, I had a bone or two mixed into my vegan dishes. Yuk. The few times this happened, I gave away my food to a person on the street in need. Singharas and samosas are mostly vegan, but dont trust the ones filled with onions! Sometimes I would repeat 15 times: NO MEAT! […] The post Vegan In Bangladesh appeared first on The Veggie Blog.

Wild Beets – Santa Gertrudis Ibiza

October 4 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera is a village located in the geographic heart of Ibiza. The village is seen as the center for foodies because of the many restaurants and shops with organic produce. Santa Gertrudis, short for Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera, is also called the culinary heart of Ibiza. In and around Santa Gertrudis, various organic products are grown and sold. Santa Gertrudis is truly is a lovely Ibiza style village, but the main reason for our visit was a great vegan restaurant called Wild Beets. Wild Beets was founded by Cliff Grubin as a natural progression from his juice bar. He has spent much of his life investigating, researching and experimenting with food in a quest to live an aware and healthy life. Cliff designed Wild Beets as a place where people can experience healthy choices and find out more about veganism without sacrificing flavour and enjoyment. Wild Beets is a place for conscious eating - and, of course, they serve up deliciousness too! The menu is completely vegan and gluten-free, with several raw dishes. One review online stated: In 14 days we have eaten here 14 times. We varied between breakfast and lunch. Super food … and nice people. A Less Heard Of Benefit Of Being Vegan

October 2 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

Youve probably heard that a vegan diet is good for your heath. Youve probably heard that its good for the planet. And you know that its good for the animals. These things are all true. However, you might not have heard one of my personal favorite things about being vegan: its an adventure. I spent the past two weeks traveling on a sailboat through the San Juan islands in the Pacific Northwest. We started in Bellingham, Washington, sailed up through the islands as far north as Victoria, B.C, and headed back, taking our time as one does on a sailboat when there is no wind. We even got to see a massive pod of Orcas, swimming 75 deep up the coastline. A sight I wont soon forget. I prepared well for the trip. Being the only vegan in our party of 5, I knew that I might have to get creative, but hey, I welcome the opportunity. I brought plenty of snacks, cans on cans of pintos, and enough kombucha to (almost) sink a ship. On our 5th night, we docked at a tiny little town on San Juan island called Friday Harbor. The rest of the group wanted to […] The post A Less Heard Of Benefit Of Being Vegan appeared first on The Veggie Blog.

AtayaCaffe in Berlin, Germany

September 7 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

Tucked away in a quiet side street off Prenzlauer Allee, AtayaCaffe is bringing a combination of Sardinian sunshine and Senegalese flair to this corner of Prenzlauer Berg. Berlin HappyCow ambassadors J-Veg and Kyttiara went to check it out and enjoy a slow breakfast. Stepping into this cosy cafe decorated with Senegalese wall hangings, we immediately felt at home as we were welcomed with warm smiles. Our taste buds already began tingling as we saw food being brought out from the kitchen for other guests, and we decided to sit outside in the sunshine next to the mini garden on the pavement, where we were joined by owners Elisabetta and Bachir. Elisabetta told us how she had achieved success working under the guidance of a renowned Sardinian chef in Italy for 8 years, but had a dreamt of opening her own place where she could really give a free rein to her culinary creativity. Bachir is a musician and composer with a passion for great food, and together they decided to open their own cafe. Unfortunately the bureaucracy in Italy didnt allow them the freedom they wanted, and so they took the brave decision to make Berlin not only the home […] The post AtayaCaffe in Berlin, Germany appeared first on The Veggie Blog.

How I Stay Vegan In Western China

August 24 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

As a China 22 (the cohort year) United States Peace Corps Volunteer, I knew that being vegan in another country would sometimes be tough. The first thing we do here in China is live in a hotel where breakfast is provided, and I ate most of my calories during morning meals during that time. In the beginning, due to culture shock and language barriers, I was afraid to venture outside of the hotel for food. I even contemplated forgoing veganism for a while to completely embrace the food culture and stop worrying so much about what was on my plate. After moving in with my host family and simply feeling sick from consuming food cooked with animal products, (I simply picked out the vegetables) I realized that culture or not, it wasn’t for me. Not only did I feel awful, the guilt sat on me like a blanket. I guess once you go down a path of an ethical nature, it’s hard to stray, and I’m happy about that. I’ve always enjoyed junk food, but I’m a healthy food girl at heart, and I had to return to a whole food plant based diet just to keep my energy levels […] The post How I Stay Vegan In Western China appeared first on The Veggie Blog.

Soleterra Bottega Naturale & Bistro

July 26 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

Fasano is a village in the beautiful region of Puglia. Its close to sea, and there are olive groves everywhere. There are lots of places with good food in Italy (hey its Italy!), but if you want something besides a great pasta pomodoro or a pizza without cheese, please stop by Soleterra. You will be pleasantly surprised. Soleterra is a cosy health-shop with a restaurant. Its organic but not completely vegan. That being said, they are more than willing to help you with vegan options. The owners were ever so nice and we had a great meal with lots of veggies, very well seasoned and surprising combinations. We had a tapas style lunch here–we had all kind of dishes that we shared. It is not cheap (Puglia is overall a cheaper place to go out for lunch of dinner) but it is good, organic and fresh (and vegan)! There is a very friendly ambiance at Soleterra, and there were several locals who stopped by for lunch (always a good sign!). So when planning a trip to Puglia, make sure Soleterra is on you list of places to go! Five Things Im No Longer Skeptical About Going Vegan (Plus GIVEAWAY)

July 24 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

When I went vegan it was overnight. I pretty much went to bed with chicken wing sauce on my fingers and woke up pressing tofu. In fact, my whole vegan saga is the subject of the new book The Skeptical Vegan (Skyhorse Press) coming out at the end of July. (Make sure to read through to the end for a GIVEAWAY!) I was the last person on the planet that youd expect to go vegan. I was a known omnivore with strong leanings toward carnivore. If it wasnt beef, it was chicken. If it wasnt chicken, it was pork. Once a year it was turkey. On Friday it was fish. I ate shark, octopus, conch, lamb, goat, deer, duck, goose, squirrel, bison, and even bear. If it could be killed, butchered, baked, or barbecued, there is a very good chance I ate it at one point in my life. For the record, and in case this book winds up in the hands of the FBI, I never ate an eagle. At least not a bald one. I had a lifelong love affair with meat and we were never breaking up. Then, one day, I woke up vegan. It wasnt easy at […] The post Five Things Im No Longer Skeptical About Going Vegan (Plus GIVEAWAY) appeared first on The Veggie Blog.

Avant Garden New York

June 27 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

Avant Garden is a wonderful vegan restaurant in East Village, New York. When you walk through the door there is a very nice ambiance. We didnt make any reservations but we were fortunate that we got seating at the bar, so we could see all the chefs work in the open kitchen. Is there anything better than watching people passionately create one wonderful plate after another? Avant Garden is truly upscale, vegan dining. They let vegetables simply be vegetables. They bring out the very best of each ingredient while bringing together various greens, veggies, fruits, grains, nuts, legumes, herbs and spices in a wonderfully creative way. Every plate is like a colorful painting, bursting with colors and flavors. The two of us shared four dishes and each of them was a feast for the eyes. We enjoyed a baby gem salad with smoked tomato, ranch and preserved lemon with avocado as a starter. Next was the toast with cremini mushroom with onion marmalade, grapes, herb de Provence and walnut puree on the side. We topped it off with two great main dishes; roasted carrots with faro, ramp chimmichuri, tzatziki and some pita bread and my favorite parpadelle pomodoro with herbed gremolata. 5 Tips for Taking Beautiful Vegan Food Photos

June 12 2017 Happy Cow veggie blog

Everybody loves food. We love talking about food, we love eating food, and we love beautiful photos of food. But we don’t want to see someone else’s veggie dinner hastily thrown together on a weekday night; we want to be inspired and tantalized by amazing gourmet experiences. With just a few tricks, you can up your photography game to share edible moments in a way thats artistic, appealing, informative, and inspiring.  Whether it’s for Instagram, HappyCow, or another online platform, here are our five top tips! 1. Find The Best Natural Light The number-one most important aspect of photography is lighting.  Obvious as this may seem, it can be a bit of a challenge in real life to snag that clearly diffused natural luster, especially when at a restaurant or cafe.  Its particularly important to pay attention to this when shooting on an a phone, but its still key regardless of how fancy your camera is.  Light is crucial because it effects the colour of the food, the way the shapes, shadows, and highlights appear, and the spectrum of the background or setting. Youre after diffused natural light: anything that isnt artificial indoor light (which tints food orange) or glaring sunshine (which casts harsh shadows).
